Swissport opens three new air cargo warehouses in Canada
04 September, 2024

Swissport opened a new air cargo warehouse at Halifax Stanfield International Airport, the third new cargo location in Canada in under half a year. With cargo volumes on the rise, the company is anticipating continuing growth in the segment. Just recently, new facilities have also opened at Montréal–Mirabel International Airport and Edmonton International Airport. On 1 October, Swissport opened a new air cargo warehouse at Halifax Stanfield International Airport, its sixth cargo location in Canada and the third new Canadian warehouse in under half a year. With the new 370 sqm facility, Swissport complements its local offering in Passenger Services with Air Cargo Handling and continues to deliver on its ambitions in the Canadian air cargo market. In comparison with 2019, the company’s volumes in Canada are up 35%, underlining the need for increased warehousing and logistics capacity. “With the opening of new warehouses across Canada, we are leveraging Swissport‘s global expertise to deliver world-class air cargo handling at more Canadian airports,” says Charles Roberge, CEO of Swissport in Canada. “We are adding more services in more places making sure we meet the growing needs of our customers and changes in the industry. With its comprehensive service portfolio Swissport in Canada aspires to be the partner of choice for global and local customer airlines alike and we will continue to invest in our service delivery.” Just recently, new air cargo warehouses were opened at Montréal–Mirabel International Airport and Edmonton International Airport. The 500 sqm Montréal-Mirabel location again represents an extension of Swissport’s local service offering, adding Air Cargo Handling to the established Fueling activities. At Edmonton International, the existing full range of Passenger Services is supplemented by a new 1,000 sqm air cargo warehouse with options for a further expansion. The additional capacity contributes to Swissport’s focus on cargo growth in the region. "Enabling continued growth in our cargo and logistics sector is a major priority and this expansion by Swissport is a great example of business leadership.” says Tom Ruth, President and CEO of Edmonton International Airport. “Swissport is one of the largest air cargo handling companies in the world and a long-time member of our airport community. With the growth in cargo business at EIA, Swissport is seizing the opportunity to expand its services and create more jobs and opportunities for our community. 2020 saw tremendous growth in cargo demand and that has continued this year. As the only Canadian airport community with the global IATA CEIV Pharma certification, we look forward to more developments supporting EIA's position as a major logistics centre.

MSC to operate new direct Gothenburg-US service
04 September, 2024

MSC, the world's largest container shipping company, will be operating the new direct service that will call at the Port of Gothenburg weekly. The first call on the loop departs from the APM Terminals container terminal in the Port of Gothenburg on March 31 and will reach New York 11 days later. The loop then continues through Philadelphia and Norfolk, after which the vessel will return to Scandinavia and the Baltics with American goods. The first loop will be operated by the vessel MSC Cornelia. ”The new direct connection between the Baltic Sea and the east coast of the United States has been in great demand and is the only one on the market today. With the new service, we are also strengthening our offer through Gothenburg, which we are very positive about,” said Maria Sturgis, MD at MSC Sweden. Measured in tonnes, Swedish exports of goods transported in containers to the US have increased by an average of four percent per year over the past five years. Between 2020 and 2021, US exports increased by nine percent. ”The US is Sweden's largest export market outside Europe, and also a growing one. This direct traffic is a very welcome addition that further strengthens the Port of Gothenburg as the guarantor for Swedish industry’s access to the world,” said Claes Sundmark, Vice President Sales & Marketing at the Gothenburg Port Authority.

Finnair continues serving Shanghai and Seoul with strong cargo support
04 September, 2024

Finnair has continued to update its traffic program due to the closure of the Russian airspace. The further increased price of cargo currently enables continuing of passenger services to Finnair’s key Asian markets even with the longer flight times. Finnair now continues to serve Seoul and Shanghai from its Helsinki hub. At the same time, Finnair cancels flights to Osaka and Hong Kong until the end of April. Starting this week, as of 10 March, Finnair flies to Shanghai once a week on Thursdays, and as of 12 March to Seoul three times a week on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays. The flight routes avoid Russian airspace, and the flight time for the Shanghai and Seoul routes will be 12-14 hours, depending on the direction. Both routes go around the Russian airspace from the south, and the return flight from Seoul to Helsinki can also take the northern route. “We strive to offer our customers connections between Europe and Asia to the extent it is possible in this challenging situation,” says Ole Orvér, Chief Commercial Officer, Finnair. “We understand how frustrating the situation is to our customers and are very sorry about the inconvenience and trouble the flight changes are causing them.” Avoiding the Russian airspace on flights between Europe and Asia has considerable impacts on flight times, thus impacting fuel, personnel, and navigation costs. Finnair announced earlier this week that it will continue to fly to Tokyo, going around the Russian airspace, with four weekly flights as of 9 March. Finnair also continues to fly to Bangkok, Delhi, Phuket, and Singapore, with routes avoiding the Russian airspace. Finnair informs customers personally via email and text messages of changes to their flights. Customers can then either change the travel date or seek a refund, if they don’t want to use an alternative flight or if re-routing is not available.
